I am now in the process of migrating my site from wordpress.com over to my own hosted WordPress site. This will be give me better control of the site itself including its design as well as permalink structure which means better and more user intuitive URLs.
This slightly makes me sad as I’ll be pushing slightly out of bounds in terms of the WordPress community I’ve come to love. I’ll still be able to like other blogs and posts and use the WordPress Reader to find other blogs I love and comment on them. I however won’t be able to be found on the Reader anymore as my site won’t be hosted with wordpress.com.
I loved that connectivity. It allowed me to have spoken to so many people so far and it has been awesome. But overall I think a self-hosted site is going to better serve my needs and it doesn’t mean I’m disappearing. I just have to rely on actually engaging in the community more to get more people to come and see my blog while I go over to theirs. This is not a bad thing at all and I’m looking forward to it.
This also is going to open up the opportunity (more) for learning better SEO habits in order to ensure my blog reaches the right people. There will be no relying solely on the reader and my tags for people to find me. It will have to be a good combination of tags, categories, quality content, images and good titles. This should always be the goal of all bloggers, but keep in mind I started this to better my writing abilities. Now I just get to take that step further in the unknown and see what I can make of it.
All who have subscribed to me so far will be coming along with me. So I’m sure I won’t be losing anyone. As subscribers, you will still get my notifications of new posts.
This is going to take some time as there is some preparation that has to be done in terms of setting up this current blog to then forward to my new blog address. All the link structures will be changing so for all 63 posts I currently have, I’ll have to do a proper redirect for all the places I’ve linked so far such as the Daily Post Prompts.
If something looks broken or isn’t working quite correctly, now you’ll understand why and if there is something still looking out of the ordinary once the transition is complete, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Because if I’m unaware, I won’t be able to get it fixed up, and it will be super appreciated.
I will also be looking to do a post on everything I went through to migrate properly to an external host so that anyone interested in moving in the future can have a rough guideline to follow and what the benefits of it will be.
In the event the redirects aren’t working properly, or just for plain old FYI, my current blog is https://brainpandatadump.wordpress.com. My new blog will have be at my own website as https://blog.cmdrshane.com. Now you know where I’ll be hiding.
After all, in the world of the open web, sharing, is the way to the future.
